I was heavily constipated as a child, and even now sometimes struggle to have one bowel movement a week. I've started to have more fibre, fresh veg and loads of water, but I'm worried there's a 'backlog' of excrement inside me, possibly years old, that will stay and poison me unless i flush it out.
Do I need my colon cleansed or will a high fiber diet alone clean my insides? Do home cleansing kits work? What about colonic irrigation? Whats the best option for someone with a low budget?Colonic cleansing?
This is a myth. If you actually had waste in your colon for even a few weeks you would die. I hear this from time to time trotted out usually by people looking to sell something.

You do not get a ';backlog'; of years old excrement. That whole idea is nonsense, but the colon cleanse sellers like to spread the myth. Don't worry about it.
The high fiber diet alone will keep things moving. Forget about the rest of it.
A combination of both is what I would do - start with one of these cleansing herbal formulae. I like to use ';Super Cleanse'; by Nature's Secret - they've got a package that's 2 types of tablets to be used together - one is herbs and the other is fiber. Usually, I can just take this for a couple of days and it cleans out my system. Your body may take a few days longer, depending on how much needs to be 'cleaned out'.
Once you feel you are cleaned out, I would suggest finding something that you can eat on a daily basis - like a big ceasar salad for lunch - that helps you to stay regular. My roommate would eat a handful of carrots everyday and that was sufficient for her. The point is, you may need to experiment to find something that your body accepts. Water alone won't do it - you need to find something with bulk fiber - not like the fiber that's in oatmeal, that's not enough bulk.
